Man struck supermarket worker on head with two bottles and caused damage

A CLONDALKIN man who struck a supermarket worker on the head with two bottles and caused damage to a checkout area has been put on probation for a year.

Glen Byrne who attacked the victim after becoming threatening in the shop avoided a prison sentence when a judge instead put him on a probation bond.

Byrne, aged 41 with an address at Harelawn Avenue, admitted assault causing harm, breach of the peace, criminal damage and producing glass bottles in the course of a fight.

Judge Gerard Jones put him on a supervisory bond after noting that a probation report on the accused was “very favourable.”

Blanchardstown District Court had heard Byrne went to SuperValu, Rowlagh, Clondalkin, on October 27, 2018 and became threatening and abusive to staff.

He assaulted the victim by hitting him about the head with two glass bottles and caused damage to a glass divider and bottles at the checkout.

Byrne also admitted other charges, including trespassing at Melrose Avenue, Clondalkin on April 4 last and stealing a €49.99 angle grinder and €34.99 drill at Lidl, Fonthill on February 10.

In the trespassing incident, the court heard Byrne was located in a private property following a garda pursuit. He had served a sentence but it took him “some time to get himself fully back on track,” his solicitor said.

The court heard Byrne had been made homeless because of his anti-social behaviour. He was now back in the family home.
