The case was before Judge Miriam Walsh for hearing.

The woman had originally pleaded not guilty but changed her plea on the hearing date.

Presenting Sergeant Maria Callaghan told Judge Walsh that at 12.30am on the above date, a Garda had come across the woman walking on Deansrath Avenue with four children aged between four and 11.

Sgt Callaghan said: “The garda asked the defendant if she was okay. The defendant told the Garda to ‘f**k off’.”

Sgt Callaghan said he woman had two previous convictions from 2007.

The woman’s solicitor, Simon Fleming, said his client is a mother of five children and comes from a family of nine. He said the woman had been at her mother’s house and had an argument with her mother.

He said she had been upset and had been walking home with four of her children when she was stopped by the Garda.

Judge Walsh said: “Why did she tell the Garda to f**k off when it was a cold night and the Garda was trying to help her?”

Mr Fleming said the woman was in receipt of €357 social welfare per week.

Judge Walsh ordered the woman to pay €450 to Brother Kevin in the Capuchin Day Centre in Church Street.

Judge Walsh said: “So that others who need it may be nice and snug”.

She gave the woman a month to pay the donation and told her that she would be convicted and fined if she did not pay it.
