Plotting to speed up the availability of allotments

By Maurice Garvey

WITH demand for allotments increasing significantly in recent years, one local representative has welcomed news that South Dublin County Council are to speed up the availability of unused plots in Corkagh Park.

Sinn Fein Councillor Mark Ward said: “I made representations to the council on behalf of plot holders, and I’m pleased that they are in the process of offering vacant plots to those currently on the waiting list for the new season. At the moment, there are 39 plots in Corkagh Park, however currently only 26 of these are in use.”

He continued: “On a recent visit to the allotments to meet plot holders, some of the unused plots were overgrown, neglected, and encroaching onto well-maintained plots.

“It is council policy that an allotment must have three-quarters of its area cultivated. A failure to maintain a plot could see the allotment taken back and re-let.”

There are currently 425 council allotments at four locations across the county in Bohernabreena (297), Palmerstown (76), Tymon Park (13), and Corkagh Park (39).

Annual rent ranges from €50 to €250, depending on the size of the plot, with a deposit of €50 required.

Allotments can provide a good source of affordable fresh food, and it is recommended users spend up to six hours a week on plots to keep them in good condition.

The council say demand for allotments has “increased significantly” in the last number of years, and those interested in applying for a plot, can do so on
