Supermarket workers aim to raise €15,000 for Robert

By Maurice Garvey

TWO years ago, Robert O’Sullivan was walking to work in Clondalkin Village, when suddenly he was hit by a car, an accident that has left him with multiple serious injuries.

The impact of the Ninth Lock Road accident on August 29, 2017, was so severe that it propelled him onto another car which was passing by on the opposite side of the road.

Robert O’Sullivan, coming on ‘in leaps and bounds

Robert (32), from Bawnogue, an employee at Dunnes Stores in the Mill Shopping Centre, spent much of the next two years in Beaumont Hospital as doctors treated a significant brain injury and carried out numerous operations.

“He was moved to Peamount about four months ago, and is coming on in leaps and bounds there,” said Laura Buckley, a friend of Robert.

“He is in a rehab unit in Peamount and is now moving an arm and even speaking a few words. Doctors in Beaumont said he would never speak again. He seems to be doing great with the physio and speech therapy.”

Laura says Robert’s family have been taking him on days out, hiring a minivan each time, and he has also been to the cinema with his group of local friends.

“My mother Kathleen Buckley, a colleague of Robert’s in Dunne Stores, has organised a fundraiser for Robert,” said Laura.

“His fellow workers at Dunnes are aiming to raise €15k to buy a minivan adapted for Rob. We will be doing in-store buckets on tills from Tuesday to Thursday, and on Thursday from 10am to 8pm – we will all have fundraising T-shirts and bag packing.”

The Echo understands Robert and his family are expected to make an appearance at Dunnes on Thursday at 1pm.

Friends of Robert and local residents have already raised over €11k for his extensive care requirements over the last two years.
