Trucks collide with height barrier six times

By Maurice Garvey

HGV trucks have collided with height barriers at The Mill Shopping Centre in Clondalkin six times over the last 12 months.

The Echo understands the majority of incidents have occurred late at night, and on each occasion, the driver has failed to stop, despite hitting a barrier at the shopping centre.

The privately owned car park is often used as a rat run by drivers travelling towards the Old Nangor Road/Fonthill direction.

Due to most of the incidents occurring late at night, The Echo understands it has been hard for CCTV cameras to pick out registration plates.

An incident before Christmas, saw a truck hit the height barrier, leading to long traffic delays in the area.

The collisions have resulted in a considerable cost for the shopping centre, in terms of repairs and clean ups.

Height and weight restrictions are in place at the car park for a number of reasons, including public safety for customers.

Restrictions are also in place for environmental reasons, with the River Camac running directly under the car park.

Last week, The Echo reported that parking at The Mill was more “rigorously enforced” in recent times, the centre saying it was to free up space for customers and deter long-term parking, amid complaints from motorists who have been clamped.

According to the Road Safety Authority, the maximum weight limit for six or more axle rigid trucks is 46 tonnes.

Drivers face penalties of three penalty points and a €60 fine if detected using a vehicle in a public place without an authorisation plate fitted, or if a vehicle has been modified or altered to circumvent the regulations.
