CONSTRUCTION has started this week on the long-sought-after Lucan swimming pool.

The project, which will take an estimated 20 months to complete, is  funded by a grant of €3.8 million from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport. South Dublin County Council will contribute €9.8 m to the capital cost.

The facilities that will be available in the new public swimming pool building will include a 25 metre long, six-lane, 13 metre wide pool, as well as a 13 metre long, eight metre wide, multi-use pool.

The new facility will also include a gymnasium and fitness suites, changing facilities, cafeteria and associated accommodation, with car-parking to allow for 107 car parking spaces, including six accessible parking spaces and 78 bicycle parking spaces.

The project will follow the Nearly Zero Energy Performance Building Directive (EPBD) in pursuing the highest level of energy conservation, both in design and running costs.

Speaking to The Echo, Lucan councillor and mayor of SDCC Vicki Casserly said: “I am delighted construction has finally commenced on the long-awaited Lucan swimming pool. When completed it will enhance our area with a state-of-the-art amenity. Well done to all councillors, TDs, MEP Frances Fitzgerald, Pool4Lucan, SDCC, and all who played their part in securing this project over the last 40 years. I am proud of the role I played in ensuring universal design is implemented and additional funding was granted to ensure our pool is accessible to all.”
