Over 100 bicycles stamped with Eircode at Garda event

OVER 100 bicycles were engraved with their Eircode at a special event in Lucan Garda Station.

The humble two-wheeler is still a very popular Christmas present and those who got bicycles from Santa Claus and other cyclists were able to get their new steeds engraved.

The bike safety event was organised by Lucan Community Policing. Community Gardai also provided information on theft prevention and methods and techniques.

The event was originally planned for 12 noon to 3pm but was extended to 4pm such was the demand for engraving.

A Garda spokesman told The Echo: “We had a great turn-out. Over 100 bikes were engraved and we extended the event out to 4pm to cope with the demand.”

Local councillor Liona O’Toole said she hopes the gardai can hold the event again.

She said: “It was a really successful event.

Hopefully it can be held again.

Some were unable to attend and the gardai confirmed to me that they will look at accommodating them.

People are always advised to mark their belongings so the bike engraving was a really good initiative.

The Gardai recommend that you spend 10 per cent to 20 per cent on the value of your bicycle on two locks.

You should lock your bike tightly to an immovable object and keep the lock off the ground.

Take a photo of the bicycle, note the serial number and email it to yourself and lock the bicycle indoors or in well-lit areas where possible.
