Retired couple scoop 500k in lucky Lotto win

By Mark Keane

A retired married couple, who were about to leave a busy shop queue, ended up winning a €500,000 Euromillions Plus Prize in The Square Shopping Centre, Tallaght, on Friday.

The couple were ready to leave the queue at Ticketron in The Square that evening due to tiredness before ultimately sticking it out - and the wait was definitely worth while.

Retired couple won €500,000 Euromillions Plus Prize in The Square

The winning wife said: “I was a bit tired when I joined the queue and I was in no humour for the wait.

“There were three people in front of me and I was about to walk away when one person got served and I just thought ‘Ah sure I may as well stick with it now’.

"My God when you think of it. Imagine if I had stepped out and got a ticket in the local shop later on? It wouldn’t be the two of us sitting here in the Winners Room!”

According to the couple, they will use the 500,000 prize to help their children out with their mortgages, to make their retirement more comfortable and to “have a little extra to spend on a holiday”.

“We are both retired and have our own mortgage cleared off so it really is a lovely amount to win," said the happy husband after the win.

"We can help our kids and grandkids out with a few bits and pieces in the coming years.

"As for ourselves, we’re both happy and healthy so it will be nice to have a little extra to spend on a holiday whenever we need to - but you never know what is around the corner so it’s nice to have this to keep our minds at ease."

The couple, who were at National Lottery HQ yesterday (Monday) to claim their cheque, were one of two winners of the EuroMillions top prize from the draw on Friday 9 March.
