Bates back in Elite title fight

ST MARY’S Boxing Club man George Bates will face off against Wayne Kelly of Portlaoise in a battle for the National Elite 63kg title tomorrow night in the National Stadium.

Former champion, Bates secured his berth in this year’s decider after he scored a unanimous 5-0 decision over Gerard Matthew of St Paul’s Antrim in the penultimate rounds on Monday night.

That victory followed hot on the heels of his equally convincing triumph over Yannick Meseke of Olympic Galway in the preliminaries.

His opponent in the tomorrow night’s final, Kelly, came through a tough test in the form of Mulhuddart’s Michael Avetisian, winning out on a 3-2 split.
