Guiney takes National crown

DRIMNAGH Boxing Club’s Taylor Guiney completed his march to the National Senior Cadet 63kg title following his victory over St Mary’s Sam Leonard in the decider on Saturday in the National Stadium.

The 15-year-old competitor from Saggart was the youngest boxer in his division at these championships, but turned in a performance that belied his young age.

Indeed in the quarter finals he chalked up a convincing 5-0 victory over Darragh Reddan of St David’s.

This set him up for a clash with multi-national champion Matthew Tyndall of Arklow – a fight that saw him defy the odds and edge a thrilling 3-2 victory.

Against the taller Sam Leonard in the final, Guiney maintained his composure in what was, at times, a messy encounter, and again he took a unanimous decision, subsequently keeping Drimnagh BC joint top of the national title table this season along with Mullingar Olympic.

The club is hopeful that Guiney will be included on the National Senior Cadet squad for October’s European Championship in Russia.

Now in training with the squad, he could get the chance to copper-fasten his place on the panel when they take on England in a scheduled international.

“Taylor has had a great season” said Drimnagh Boxing Club’s William Carruth.

“He won the Boy Four All-Ireland title earlier in the season and we said we’d put him into the Senior Cadets, thinking next season would be his year, but he won them at his first attempt.

“He was away with us in Canada this year and he was the only one of our members to box twice against a selection from the State of Ontario.

“It’s not certain yet, but we hope he’ll be on the National squad that competes in Russia” he added.

Guiney’s Drimnagh clubmate Abi Sutton made it as far as the Senior Cadets Girls 66kg semi finals, but lost out to eventual champion Leah Gallan from Raphoe.
