Hyland targeting Olympic Games

TALLAGHT and National Centre swimmer Brendan Hyland has Olympic Games qualification in his sight this year.

Having, last year, just missed out on qualification for the Summer Games in Tokyo when he posted a 200m Butterfly time of 1.56:55 that was fractionally outside the required standard of 1.56:48 at last year’s FINA World Championships in South Korea, the Knocklyon man is determined to make the cut in 2020.

Hoping to fulfil that goal at trials in the NAC in April, Hyland will firstly turn his attention to the Flanders Cup in Belgium this weekend.

There he will have a hectic programme that includes swims in the 100m and 200m Butterfly, 100m and 200m Freestyle and 200m IM.

That meet will be followed up with a trip to France for the Golden Tour in early February after which he will line out in the Dave McCullagh Meet later that month and the Edinburgh International in March.

While Hyland will be focusing primarily on qualification in the 200m Butterfly, there remains the possibility of travelling to Tokyo as part of a relay squad.

Indeed both the Ireland 4x200m Freestyle and 4x100m Medley squads, of which Hyland is currently a member, remain in a solid position to clinch qualification following impressive performances in South Korea last year.

Yet it remains to be seen if the personnel on those squads will be the same should any of them qualify for Tokyo as individual swimmers.
