By Mary Dennehy

A FREE public information evening on bowel cancer is being held in the County Library, Tallaght, on Wednesday, April 18 to mark Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, reports Mary Dennehy.

Bowel cancer is the second most common cause of death in Ireland and the information evening, hosted by Tallaght Hospital, will focus on aspects such as family history, diet, lifestyle, prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

According to Dr Anthony O’Connor, Consultant Gastroenterologist at Tallaght University Hospital: “Over 2,700 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer in Ireland each year and the information session on April 18 is designed to provide vital information to members of the public and answer any questions they may have.

“Bowel cancer, which is also known as colon, rectal or colorectal cancer, is the second biggest killer in Ireland however if it is diagnosed and treated early, the clinical outcomes are much improved for patients.

“I will be talking about the signs and symptoms to look out for as well as how diet and lifestyle can impact the health of your bowel as well as the importance of familial history.”

The free event is part of an initiative started last year by Tallaght Hospital in partnership with the Patient Community Advisory Council (PCAC), which includes regular public events staged in the community, which feature medical, nursing and allied health professions.

The Bowel Cancer Information Evening is open to the entire community of South Dublin County and will be held in the County Library, Tallaght, on Wednesday, April 18, from 6pm to 7.30pm.
