Strengthening of community spirit during estate clean up

By Aideen O'Flaherty

AS the measures around containing the spread of coronavirus continue to keep people confined to their homes and surrounding areas, there has been a strengthening of community spirit – with a group of De Selby residents recently banding together to clean up an overgrown green area.

A group of 20 residents got involved after a gardener who was hired by a local neighbour to cut the grass at a green in the estate asked if some of the residents would be willing to help out by cutting the grass at the edges of the green.

The residents helped out – all while adhering to social distancing rules – and it gave the neighbours a chance to get to know each other and get involved in their local community.

DeSelby resident Dave Stears told The Echo: “It was good fun, there was really good community spirit.

“With everything that’s going on, it was nice to do it, and it got the community together and a lot of us were meeting people who live here who we’d never seen before.”

The broad expanse of the greenspace means it’s a perfect location for the residents to enjoy the good weather while practicing social distancing.

Mr Stears added: “Everybody uses the green now, and now we can all enjoy it – particularly in this good weather. In the current climate, it makes social distancing easier for all of us.”
