387 reports of illegal dumping in Lucan

By Brendan Grehan

THERE were almost 400 reports of illegal dumping in Lucan in 2017, the Lucan Area Committee of South Dublin County Council heard last week.

Councillor Danny O’Brien put down a question asking the Chief Executive “for a report on the issue of dumping in the Lucan LEA and for this report to include the total number of reports of dumping reported to the Council this year and the total number of reports last year”.

The Council replied stating that the issue of illegal dumping in the Lucan area (and others) “is of concern”.

They said illegal dumping continues to be a major problem.

The Council said that there were 387 reports of illegal dumping in the Lucan area in 2017 and 211 up to May 31 last.

They said the figures were inclusive of CCTV reports and Ballyown Bottle Bank in Lucan.

The Council added: “Measures have been taken at locations such as the removal of textile banks and the reconfiguration of remaining recycling banks. This has reduced secluded areas that were prone to dumping and improved the cleanliness.

"Areas prone to high levels of illegal dumping activity are also included in the routine patrols undertaken by the Litter Warden Service and cleanups by public realm crews.”

The Council stated that out of 556 fixed penalty notices issued in 2017, 206 were for illegal dumping at Ballyowen Bottle Bank and out of the 301 FPN issued up until 31/5/2018, 122 of these were for illegal dumping incidents also at Ballyowen Bottle Bank.
