Boy (5) has near escape when hit by car on the Lucan Road

By Maurice Garvey

A FIVE-year-old boy had a lucky escape after he was hit by a car on Monday afternoon on the Lucan Road.

The Echo understands that the youngster ran out from behind a parked car on the Lucan Road at approximately 2.05pm, near the junction of Chapel Hill and St Mary’s Church.

The area contains a cluster of schools, including St Mary’s primary school, St Mary’s GNS, BNS, St Joseph’s Secondary School and Scoil Mhuire GNS.

Linda Hyland, an eye-witness, called the gardaí, as “it happened beside my car.”

“He walked into the ambulance after being checked by paramedics,” she said.

Kakon Islam, the uncle of the little boy, posted a message at 4pm on social media yesterday, saying his nephew is “out of danger now” and “thanks everyone for their prayers.”

A Garda spokesperson said: “A five-year-old boy ran out from behind a parked car. He was hit by the side of the car and was taken to Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin for observation.”

Fianna Fáil councillor Ed O’Brien, a solicitor based in Lucan village, said there are major concerns with regard to parents dropping and picking their kids up from school.

Cllr O’Brien said: “It can be chaos during school times. Generally, there is too much traffic in Lucan village for it to be a problem, but parents dropping off their kids can be a road safety issue.

“At the next Lucan ACM, I’ve asked council management if they can put in something that might alleviate traffic congestion in the Lucan area – particularly for St Joseph’s and St Mary’s.”
