Last orders at the Belgard Inn

By Mary Dennehy

IT’S LAST orders at the Belgard Inn this weekend, as the 43-year-old landmark pub closes its doors.

The pub is being demolished to pave the way for a Lidl store, with the German discount giant granted permission by South Dublin County Council for a new ‘concept’ store, plaza and retail/café building on site.

This week, regulars and past customers are invited to drop into the Belgard Inn for one final session, and to toast the pub and its memories.

Gerry Crawford, Manager of the Belgard Inn, told The Echo: “It’s the end of an era and many people are very sad.

“There’s a lot of local and family connections to the Belgard.”

He added: “This weekend we are inviting people, especially old customers, to drop by for a pint before we finish up on Sunday night… people can help us drink the place dry!”

Over the course of the grand finale weekend, there’ll be live music on Friday and Saturday (March 16 and 17), with two bands playing on St Patrick’s Day.

On Sunday, March 18, which is the final day, a DJ will play until last orders are called at 12.30pm.

When contacted by The Echo today, Lidl was unable to confirm if the re-development of a smaller pub on site was included in its plans.

A spokesperson for the company said: “There is no decision made yet with regards to be a pub being rebuilt, all options are being explored at present.

“Detailed design plans are being finalised at the moment and we expect to have an update on key project milestones, such as construction commencing, in approximately four weeks’ time.”
