Look out – Knocklyon kids seek out litterbugs

By Mary Dennehy

DOG owners and litterers beware, the children living in Woodstown Village are on the hunt for litterbugs in Knocklyon Park, reports Mary Dennehy.

The Woodstown Village Knocklyon Tidy Towns team has a junior committee, which, made of junior litter wardens, is responsible for a number of campaigns – including the local Bin the Poo initiative.

The junior litter wardens are working hard to keep their park litter and dog poo free, and are patrolling the area and encouraging people to bring their wrappers, empty cans and bottles home for recycling – and to bag and bin doggy poop.

Speaking with The Echo, resident and committee member Gabriel Curtis said: “The kids are a very important part in our Tidy Town programme, and do most of the litter picking, deliver newsletters, and look after the Bin the Poo campaign and hand out bags.

“The kids do most of the work and are in the park all of the time playing so keep an eye out.”

According to Gabriel, there are regularly around 50 kids working on different projects, with hundreds of kids involved in larger community events at Christmas, Easter and in the summer.

Recently, the area secured two new benches from South Dublin County Council, with support from Rathfarnham councillor Deirdre O’Donovan.

Incredible amount of work

Speaking with The Echo, Cllr O’Donovan said: “The area got two benches installed to support the Tidy Towns efforts and the incredible amount of work residents do in Woodstown Village Knocklyon.

“Residents are so committed, they really are a model for what an active residents’ association should be about.

“The council is doing what it can to support residents and meet them half-way in their efforts.”
