Grange Castle data centres given go-ahead by council

The development plans for three data centres in Grange Castle South Business Park in Clondalkin has been given the green light by South Dublin County Council – the grant of permission will last for a ten-year period. 

UCB Properties LLC lodged the plans with the local authority last May, outlining a proposal for the development of three two-storey data centres, and for the demolition of the residential property of Ballybane on the Old Nangor Road and associated farm buildings to make way for the development.

The first data centre, called Building A, is to be located to the south-west of the site and will contain 26 emergency generators, and 26 ventilation shafts.

The second data centre, building B, is to contain 18 emergency generators, and 18 ventilation shafts, and is to be located to the immediate north of Building A.

The third data centre, Building C, to be constructed last, will be located to the eastern part of the site on a north-south axis and will have a gross floor area of 28,573 sq m.

It will include 26 emergency generators located at ground-floor level within a compound to the western side of the data centre, with associated flues that will be 25m in height. The facility will also include 26 ventilation shafts.

Provision of data storage rooms, associated electrical and mechanical plant rooms, loading bays, maintenance and storage spaces, office administration areas, and plant, including PV panels at roof level as well as a separate house generator for each data centre is included in plans.

Permission was also granted for a temporary, single-storey substation, three single-storey MV buildings to the immediate west of the generator compound within buildings A and B, and to the south of the generator compound within building C.

Eight prefabricated containerised electrical rooms (65 sq m each and 520 sq m overall), that are stacked in pairs to the immediate south of the temporary substation, and the development of 150 car-parking spaces, are also included.

The council granted permission for the plans last month, with a number of conditions.

These conditions include the implementation of mitigation measures during the works, and the implementation of measures outlined in a Site-Specific Flood Risk Assessment, and an Arboricultural Implication Assessment is to be submitted before the works commence.

The Grange Castle Business Park is already a hub for data centres, as Google, Microsoft, Interxion, CyrusOne, and EdgeConneX have data centre facilities in the business park.
