Geoghegan’s EUSA Games hopes put on hold

PAUL Geoghegan will have to wait until next year to get the chance to compete in the EUSA European University Games.

The blind Judo athlete from Tallaght was due to fly out to the Serbian capital in July for the event, which has now been pushed back to the summer of 2021 due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

‘The Echo 2019 Sports Challenge’ Award winner was hoping to build on a great start to the year that saw him capture the All-Ireland Judo Championship title following a remarkable string of performances in Clonskeagh.

Not only did he surmount the challenge of four fully-sighted opponents en route to the prize, but he was competing in the +90kg division for the very first time, a remarkable achievement given that he normally lines out in the -73kg or -81kg sections.

Also due to complete in Donegal and England this year, Geoghegan, who harbours the ambition of eventually competing on the Paralympic stage, cannot wait to be back in action.

“I definitely miss it. I want to be back competing again soon because every year is so important in gaining that experience needed to get to the Paralympics” he said.
