March Sports Star of the Month: John Travers

DONORE Harriers Athletic Club star John Travers has been declared The Echo Sports Star of the Month for March after landing the National Senior Indoor 3000m title for the third year in succession.

The Drimnagh man turned in a great performance at the National Indoor Arena in Abbotstown, acing a hugely competitive final after fierce qualification saw several serious contenders for his coveted title make the cut.

Yet Travers delivered again, fending off a ferocious challenge by Dundrum South Dublin’s Hiko Tonosa to top the podium.

Indeed, the Donore man produced a devastating last 200m to win in some style for his fourth Indoor title in a row (1500m in 2017 and 3000m now in 2018, ’19 and ’20).

What’s more, this year’s competition saw him cross the line in his fastest time for any of his 3k titles as he clocked 8.00.96.
