Metcalfe back in C’ship title fight

EVAN Metcalfe exacted revenge for his loss to Myles Casey in their 2015 National Elite Championship when they met in the semi finals of this year’s 56kg competition in the National Stadium on Friday.

Now under the guidance of Paul and Patrick Hyland at the Hyland Boxing Academy, the Crumlin fighter emerged a convincing 4-1 winner over his St Francis opponent.

Evan Metcalfe is again one step away from a National Elite title

Metcalfe had already successfully negotiated the challenge of another southpaw in St Mary’s man Adam Courtney the previous week and made it comfortably through the test posed by Casey.

“I thought he had won every round, but the judges gave it to him 4-1,” Metcalfe’s coach Patrick Hyland told The Echo.

“He listened to what I was telling him to do and he did it.

“He [Casey] is a southpaw so we told Evan to wait for him and to counter with the right hand and left hook.”

Now standing in the way of Metcalfe and a first ever National Elite title this coming Saturday is Setanta’s Thomas McCarthy who took a 3-2 split decision in his respective semi final against Chritstain Cekiso of Portlaoise.

Speaking about the challenge, McCarthy will present his boxer, Hyland said “He’s a tall, long rangy boxer. I watched his semi final against Christian Cekiso and it was close.

“Evan has boxed two southpaws in the championship so hopefully McCarthy will be a little less awkward.  We’ll now get down to work in the gym and get a plan together for this Saturday.

“It’s great for us to work with a top-class lad like Evan so hopefully he can get over the line and win this Elite Championship and a lot more still,” he added.

Hyland Boxing Academy will also have plenty of interest in tomorrow night’s National Novice Championship semi finals with Luke Rice and Jamie Troy both flying the flag for the club.
