Emily (12) raises €1,800 for Temple Street Hospital

A LOCAL girl has raised €1,800 for Temple Street Hospital and donated 14-inches of her hair to the Rapunzel Foundation, a charity that makes wigs for children living with hair loss.

12-year-old Emily Smyth took the initiative to give back to the hospital where she has spent several years attending throughout her childhood.

The Scoil Aonghusa pupil suffers from a condition that affects her kidneys, so she decided that before she cut her hair for Rapunzel, she would start a fundraising drive to raise money for the Renal Unit in Children’s Hospital Ireland at Temple Street.

After growing her hair out over the past two years, the initial plan was to cut her locks off last March but the Covid-19 pandemic but a dent in those plans.

With her brother Shane, Emily started a GoFundMe called Emily’s Cut For Charity and they blew their initial €1,000 goal out of the water after just a few weeks.

Emily’s mother Elaine contacted the team in Fade Grooming in Old Bawn and they organised to cut her hair earlier in November.

Keeping Covid-19 restrictions in mind, they measured out 14-inches, cut her hair and stored it in a box for sending away to Rapunzel.

After the initial snip, the team in Fade gave Emily a trendy cut.

Rapunzel need a minimum of 14-inches of hair to go towards the creation of a Freedom Wig, which take between 20 and 25 ponytails to make.
