Former Castletymon library put up for sale

By Aideen O'Flaherty

THE former Castletymon Library building in Tallaght has gone up for sale last week, after a ‘for sale’ sign was erected by estate agents HWP.

The library closed last December after South Dublin County Council’s lease on the premises ended, and shortly thereafter a ‘to let’ sign from Redmond Property Consultants was placed on the front of the building.

The council claimed that the building was “unsuitable for occupation” as there were “ongoing leaks” that had “deteriorated the fabric” of the building while it was being used by the library service, the roof of the premises was replaced shortly after the council’s lease ended.

There are plans for a new library to be developed in the area, and it is expected that this facility will be complete and open next year.

Speaking about the recently placed ‘for sale’ sign on the front of the former library building, Mick Duff, the Labour councillor for Tallaght Central, told The Echo: “I’m pleased to see that the building has gone up for sale.

“Hopefully something of benefit to the community will go into it.

“As it stands, the fact is that it’s closed down and is an eyesore – the community would like to see a bit of life coming back into the building and increasing the footfall in the area.”

HWP were contacted for comment but they did not respond in time for print.
