‘I would hope Roadstone are good neighbours and deal with matter’

ISSUES with blasting at Roadstone’s quarry in Belgard have been going on “for quite some time”, according to a local councillor, while residents in housing estates beyond Belgard claim they’ve also been affected, reports Aideen O’Flaherty.

As reported in The Echo last week, residents in Brownsbarn claimed that blasting at the site has worsened in recent months, and has caused the windows in their houses to shake.

When the story went online, a number of commenters claimed that reverberations from the quarry blasts could be felt further afield, in Hazelgrove, Citywest, Kingswood, Brookview, Fettercairn and Ard Mor.

Fianna Fáil councillor Charlie O’Connor told The Echo: “This has been going on for quite some time, and in the past, I’ve had many calls from people in Belgard Heights about it.

“There’s clearly still an ongoing problem with it that needs to be addressed.

“I’m surprised to see that it’s affecting people from areas that hadn’t previously been in contact with me about the issue, and to see that it’s a recurring problem.

“I would hope that Roadstone would want to be good neighbours, that they will deal with the matter and reach out to the residents who are clearly upset with them.”

A spokesperson for Roadstone previously told The Echo: “Roadstone has a longstanding and very positive relationship with residents and the local community in the area near our quarry at Belgard.

“The blasting of rock at the quarry is conducted in line with international best practice guidelines and is subjected to rigorous regulatory monitoring requirements.”
