Notices to quit see 116 households evicted into homelessness this year

RECENTLY released figures show that 116 households in South Dublin County were evicted and became homeless this year have been branded “absolutely outrageous” by a local councillor.

People Before Profit councillor for Palmerstown-Fonthill, Madeleine Johansson, requested information about tenants who presented Notices to Quit to South Dublin County Council.

At a recent area committee meeting, the council stated that from January 1 to May 31 this year, 96 HAP and 26 RAS tenancies were issued with a valid Notice to Quit (NTQ).

In addition, the council’s Homeless Unit had 116 new presentations because of a valid NTQ.

Cllr Johansson said: “It’s absolutely outrageous that more than a hundred households have been evicted into homelessness by private landlords.

“These are families and individuals who are now in emergency accommodation with no real prospect of finding permanent accommodation.

“I’m myself at risk of homelessness since I received a Notice to Quit from my landlord last October, so I know the stress and trauma that these people are going through.

“It’s a disgrace that successive Fianna Fail and Fine Gael governments have refused to build public housing and relied on the private market for housing.

“This policy has completely failed for ordinary people while lining the pockets of landlords and developers.”

At the Lucan, Palmerstown and North Clondalkin Area Committee meeting this week, Cllr Johansson asked how many of the tenants are in the process of a tenant-in-situ purchase by South Dublin County Council.

In response, the council said 48 expressions of interests for tenant-in-situ purchases from private landlords had been received from the Lucan, Palmerstown and North Clondalkin area up to May 31 2023.

Currently four properties are sale agreed/with Law for completion, 16 properties are with the valuers, five properties are in negotiations, 18 are undergoing due diligence checks, and five properties are not progressing as part of the scheme.
