Sports Star 2024

Active South Dublin Sports Awards 2024. 

All monthly sports stars are in the running for Sports Star of the Year award.

The Active South Dublin Sports Awards are run in association with The Echo and with support from SDCC and the Plaza Hotel.

 

January Sports Star

Lara O’Byrne

Donore Harriers Lara O’Byrne was crowned the national senior indoor combined event champion for 2024 at the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena (NIA) in Abbotstown.

February Sports Star

Israel Olatunde

Israel Olatunde (Tallaght AC) made it three senior indoor titles in a row, matching his three 100m outdoor titles at the National Senior Indoor Championships which took place at the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena in February.

March Sports Star

Jack Woolley

SOUTH Dublin Taekwondo star Jack Woolley will be on the plane for the Olympics in Paris this July. The Tallaght lad secured qualification for his second Olympic Games after enjoying success at the European Qualification Tournament in Sofia.

Adam Olaniyan

THERE was plenty to shout about for Jobstown Boxing Club at the European Youth Championships in Croatia last month. Super-heavyweight Adam Olaniyan came out tops against Misak Tepanyan from Armenia in the 92 plus kilos to create history for his club to become the only boxer to win two European gold medals.

Ellen Walshe

ELLEN Walshe starred at the Irish Open Championships and Olympic Trials as the Templeogue swimmer secured a second Olympic Qualification Time in the 400m Individual Medley in May. Walshe, already qualified for the Games in the 200m Individual Medley, swam an impressive 4:38.05 in the 400m IM, just one tenth of a second outside the Irish Record of 4:37.94 she set three weeks ago at the Leinster Championships.

Cormac Dixon

There was joy for Tallaght athlete Cormac Dixon at the All-Ireland Schools Track and Field Championships in Tullamore. In a very tactically run event, Cormac Dixon came out tops in the Senior boys 1,500m after he saw off his main rivals in the final to go top the podium for HFCS Rathcoole.

Ellen Walshe

THERE are not too many athletes that can say they qualified for a swimming final at an Olympic Games. Well that’s what Templeogue Swim Club member Ellen Walsh achieved in Paris in July when she secured a place in the 400m final.

Thomas Abom, Edmondstown Golf Club

IT WAS all smiles for Thomas Abom when he clinched the AIG Irish Men’s Amateur Close Championship. The Edmondstown golfer, who is only 19 years old, secured the top prize for the first time with a brilliant birdie at the second tie hole in the final.

Cora McNaughton

CORA McNaughton enjoyed her best success yet in her young sailing career in September. The talented sailor who is a member of Blessington Sailing Club won the Junior Champions Cup in Cork.

Kyla Doyle

BOXER Kyla Doyle won gold in the welterweight division at the World Youth Boxing Championships in Budva, Montenegro. The Whitechurch Club member claimed a unanimous decision in her final bout against Uldana Taubay. Doyle scored 30-26 on three cards and 30-27 and 30-25 on the other two in the victory.

ADAM Olaniyan became World Youth Superheavyweight Champion at the championships in Montenegro.
