MORE than €1.2million has been allocated to South Dublin County Council for road safety schemes, which includes €600k for strengthening works to the surface of the N81.

The money was last week allocated by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) as part of a €136m kitty, which will fund multiple road safety schemes and long-awaited road projects nationwide.

Locally, South Dublin County Council is set to receive €1,263,230 for a number of projects, with €728,656 earmarked for pavement improvement works – which includes €613,656 for strengthening works to the road surface of the N81 (Tallaght Bypass).

The remaining €534,574 has been allocated for maintenance works, which includes motorway lighting (€427,500), general maintenance (€25,173), route lighting on national/secondary roads (€40,231) and winter maintenance (€27,170).

According to Michael Nolan, CEO of TII: “Today’s approval for funding by the Board allows TII to work with our local authority partners in delivering projects that will improve road user safety across our national road network.

“It is also another important step forward in the National Road Safety Strategy.”

Welcoming the funding, Dublin South West Fianna Fail TD, John Lahart said: “I welcome the allocation for improvements to the N81, which will work in tandem with works being carried out by South Dublin County Council.

“It will improve the visual aspect of the road but [the works are] important from a safety point of view.”
