
€1.4m to clean up illegal dumping
THE COST of cleaning up illegal dumping in the county came to nearly €1.4m in 2016, the Council heard at this week’s council meeting.
Councillor Liona O’Toole put down a question asking the “Chief Executive to provide a report on the costs of cleansing of illegal dumping for years 2015/2016 and 2017 to date, and to provide a report of the costs of additional litter bins installed for the same period”.
The Council replied stating that in 2015, the cost of cleaning illegal dumping in the county came to €1,306.25. The cost of the litter bin service was €430.861 and the cost of provision of new bins was €33,044 in 2015.
In 2016, the cost of cleaning up illegal dumping came to €1,378,00 with €485,433 being spent on litter bin service and €43,710 on new bins.
In 2017, the cost of cleaning up illegal dumping to the end of August came to €776,895 with €306,660 being spent on litter bin service and €26,798 on new bins. The Council added that not all of the waste disposal costs have been accounted for as yet in 2017.
