€18k refurbishment for Oncology Day Unit
By Mary Dennehy
THE Oncology Day Unit at Tallaght University Hospital, which treats between 30 and 40 patients a day, has undergone an €18k refurbishment to create a larger, more comfortable and patient-friendly multi-purpose room, reports Mary Dennehy.
The oncology unit provides medical and nursing care for patients in conjunction with specialist support, and alongside catering for scheduled patient treatments, provides a walk-in service for cancer patients who feel unwell.
The new room was opened recently
The unit had three small office spaces that were used by staff to meet with patients and their families.
However, after securing a grant of €18k from Med Day, a voluntary group of Trinity College Medical Students who raise money for hospital projects, the oncology team transformed these three small rooms into one large, comfortable, space.
The patient toilet facilities were also completely refurbished.
According to a hospital spokeswoman: “The Oncology Day Unit are ever grateful to Med Day group who raised the money for this project.
“They would also like to acknowledge the incredible support from various [Tallaght] Hospital departments and personnel who contributed to this project, particularly the Facilities and Technical Services team.
“The renovations are now complete and the final result would equal any room on ‘Room to Improve’!”
