A LOCAL Youth and Community Centre donated €2,000 following a “walk for awareness” to raise money for two children that were recently diagnosed with a rare mitochondrial disorder.

As reported recently in The Echo, Tommy (5) and his little sister Grace (4) Dickson were diagnosed with a rare Mitochondrial disorder within six months of each other - and are two of three known cases of this type of metabolic disease in Ireland.

Brookfield Youth and Community Centre in Tallaght held a ‘walk for awareness’ on Friday, June 11, with 76 people participating in the walk.

Due to current government guidelines, people who wished to participate turned up at various times from 10am to 6pm on the day.

Speaking about the event, manager of Brookfield Youth and Community Centre, Sandra Lambert said: “It went tremendously well – we had 76 people come at different stages and we did over 250 kilometres for Grace and Tommy.

“We received a message for the person who manages the GoFundMe Page and they said it was very active on the day, so it worked”, said Sandra.

While people were encouraged to donate whatever they could on the day, the centre made a generous donation to the GoFundMe page of €2000 for the two young children.

Local businesses also lent a helping hand on the day, with Rod’s Kitchen donating platters of food, Off-beat Donuts donating doughnuts for the walkers, Fast Print and Design in Brookfield helped with banners, balloons and bunting on the day and iGate, who donated paper cups and soft drinks along with other supplies for the walk.
