MORE than 40 people have recently started new careers with South Dublin County Council and have been assigned across all services within the local authority.

After more than 800 people applied for positions of clerical officer/library assistant, 42 candidates were selected and on Tuesday, April 18, started their new careers in the local government sector.

Daniel McLoughlin, Chief Executive of South Dublin County Council, said: “This is an exciting time to work in local government and I am delighted to welcome these enthusiastic staff members, who I am certain will make a positive impact on the innovative services we deliver to the citizens of South Dublin County.”

According to local authority management, the return to recruitment of entry level staff is a key priority of South Dublin County Council, with recruitment ongoing since the lifting of the government’s moratorium on recruitment and promotion in the public services in 2015.

The new batch of recruits will also help to balance out recent figures which, reported on in The Echo last week, reveal that less than five per cent of staff at South Dublin County Council are aged 30 or under – with three quarters of staff aged over 40 and more than 44 per cent aged 51 or over.
