€50,000 set aside for upgrade works on Orwell roundabout

UPGRADE works on the Orwell Roundabout in Templeogue have hit a snag as South Dublin County Council cannot yet carry out the planting of the final section of the roundabout, to include specimen trees, shrubs, grasses, ground cover plants and bulbs, until weather and ground conditions improve.
The is the second time that the upgrading project, which is being carried out with a budget of €50,000 as part of the Public Realm Improvement Works Programme, has been beset by delays.

Work commenced on site clearance last June, and hard landscaping works were then carried out and were largely completed by August, however a large quantity of subsoil and topsoil was required for the upgrade and the council’s source for these materials fell through and alternative sources had to be found.
This caused a delay in September that was resolved by November and enabled the council’s landscaping works on the roundabout to continue, then as a result of the inclement weather this spring the council’s planting work on the roundabout has not yet reached completion.
A spokesman for SDCC told The Echo: “Planting of the final section of the roundabout will be completed as soon as weather and ground conditions on site are suitable.
“The council is monitoring the site to determine the earliest possible date for resumption of planting works.”
Elsewhere, the roundabout at Ballymount Industrial Estate in Tallaght has been upgraded and landscaped using a combination of red beach pebble and bamboo around the perimeter of the roundabout, and the inset contains resin bound gravel, granite boulders and a specimen tree.
