€7.5 million in drugs seized since the start of the year

DRUGS worth approximately €7.5m have been seized by the Tallaght District drugs unit since the start of the year, The Echo has learned.
Approximately €300,000 in cash, believed to be related to the sale and supply of drugs, has also been seized.

These seizures were made by local units, and do not include seizures made by the Tallaght District team when assisting national units.
The latest haul by members of Tallaght Garda Station saw approximately €5m of suspected ecstasy and MDMA seized following a search of a premises in the Tallaght area last Friday, November 20.
As a result of information received by gardai, a search warrant was obtained and executed for the premises and a search conducted by Tallaght gardai and members of the Tallaght District Drugs Unit.
According to a Garda statement released at the time: “During the course of the search, Gardai located two large plastic barrels which contained 76.9kg of suspected ecstasy tablets packed in bags and 8.27kg of suspected MDMA in blocks.
“The total drugs seized is believed to be €5 million.

“All drugs seized are subject to analysis.”
At this time, no arrests have been made in relation to this seizure.
Speaking with The Echo this week, Tallaght District Superintendent Ian Lackey said that to date, around €7.5m worth of drugs have been seized by local units in 2020.
“We’ve seized €7.5m [worth of drugs] through the Tallaght District drugs unit, including the most recent seizure of €5m”, Supt Lackey said.
“We have also seized approximately €300,000 in cash, believed to be related to the sale and supply of drugs.”
He added: “Up until last week’s seizure, the majority of drugs seized has been cannabis.
“The majority, around 70 per cent, of what we were getting is cannabis, with the majority of the rest, cocaine.
“During Covid, drugs seizures have gone up, partly because there’s more gardai out and about.”
Tallaght District Drugs Unit has one sergeant and nine members, who draw resources from other units when required.
They also assist national units in relation to investigations and searches.
Supt Lackey has encouraged members of the community to report any suspected drug activity in their area.
