Stewarts school target €200k for new play area for children

STEWARTS School in Palmerstown has launched a promotional video on social media promoting the construction of a play area.
The school has also launched a gofundme page with a target of €200,000. So far they have raised €37,000 so they have some way to go.
They are due to move into a new school building in September 2019. The school is a small special needs school and needs a specialist, inclusive playground that will give every child the opportunity to play, learn and grow.
The new school will be the biggest special school in the country and it will cater for students aged four to 18 with moderate to severe and profound learning difficulties, some students with autism and some with complex medical needs.
The Department of Education and Skills are funding the building costs for the school but the school has to cover the cost of playground equipment.
The cost of the equipment for the four play areas is in the region of €200,000. Stewarts School is looking for sponsorship for individual pieces of equipment. For example the cost of one disability swing is €15,000.
School Principal Mary Carrig is happy with the fundraising so far.
She said: “We have raised just €37,000 so far so we have some way to go. The Department of Education will fund the building of the school but not play areas so we will have to start fundraising. During the Mini-Marathon in June, we managed to raise just over €13,000.”
