Staff shocked to discover 39 jobs could be at risk

STAFF are facing the prospect of job losses at Local Employment Services (LES) and Jobs Clubs in South Dublin County, following confirmation from the South Dublin County Partnership this week.

The Echo understands staff were informed of the situation at meetings this week, which could see up to 39 job losses by August.

Managed by development company South Dublin County Partnership, the LES and Jobs Club have offices in Tallaght and Clondalkin, plus outreach services across the county in areas like Lucan and Blessington.

Larry O’Neill, CEO at SDC South Dublin County Partnership, said there is a “reorganisation of services” which will be going out to tender, but they are hopeful of mitigating the amount of staff cuts.

“If successful, we could lose up to 20 jobs, but if unsuccessful, there could be up to 39 redundancies,” said Mr O’Neill.

He said it is a possibility that the organisation will lose “staff with us a long time and highly qualified staff”.

“It is at the very early stages. There is a legal obligation to inform staff of the situation, but we are confident that we will win the contract.”

A source close to staff told The Echo that many were “shocked” to discover the prospect of losing their jobs at meetings this week.

“To say many are dumbfounded and devastated is quite the understatement,” said the source.

The Job Clubs are funded by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection, and run effective three or four-week programmes in Tallaght, Clondalkin and Lucan.

The LES provides clients with support and guidance to get back into employment through one to one career guidance, information and training, education options and employment opportunities.
