IN THE early hours of World Suicide Prevention Day on Saturday, hundreds gathered at St Anne’s GAA Club to take part in a supportive dawn walk into Bohernabreena reservoir.

Organised by St Anne’s GAA Club and Shane Smith Fitness in support of the Tree of Hope organisation, the 5km walk left the Bohernabreena-based club at 6am and travelled through the scenic reservoir.

Hundreds gathered in support of those who have lost their lives to suicide, the families and friends left behind and those living with mental health issues.

Speaking after the event, Shane Smith, who runs Shane Smith Fitness, said: “To see the hundreds of people walking into the light was something special.

“For many there this morning, the importance of keeping the candle lit for lost loved ones was very evident. Gone but always remembered.

“For others the fight continues daily, this morning was no different.”

He added: “However [Saturday’s] event was a powerful message that the power of people coming together can overcome many adversities.

“When we think of what the Tree of Hope symbolises this [walk] was just that, Hope.

“The walk was uplifting, positive and provoked conversation. It’s good to talk and it’s great to walk.”

Thanks Shane and his team of volunteers, Noeleen Fulham, of Tree of Hope, said: “The walk was a great way to get people together and to highlight the work around the Tree of Hope and also Shane’s passion for fitness and how promoting a healthy body can help promote a healthy mind.

“The walk was an amazing emotional morning, with hundreds turning up, both adults and children and even our furry friends.”

Alongside the walk, a short vigil was held at the Tree of Hope planted at the first bridge in Bohernabreena, which included music and a balloon release to remember all of those who lost their lives to suicide.

“What an amazing community we live in and often take for granted”, Noeleen said.

“Well done Tallaght you did us proud and we all look forward to repeating this same walk next year.”

The day was also marked with four Tree of Hope plantings in Wexford, Waterford, Sligo and Offaly.
