‘Action required’ over traffic

A COUNCILLOR has said that “action is required” in relation to traffic issues that are affecting residents near Scoil Chaitlín Maude in Hazelgrove, after South Dublin County Council’s road safety officer carried out a traffic report last May.

Councillors Cathal King (Sinn Féin), Martina Genockey (Labour), Brian Leech (Solidarity) and Charlie O’Connor (Fianna Fáil) requested that the area be re-inspected at the Tallaght Traffic Management Meeting in May, after an inspection was carried out earlier that month.

The council’s road safety officer visited the site on Monday, May 14, from 2.20pm to 3.15pm where they made a number of observations, including claiming that double yellow lines on the approach to the school warden crossing from a “green area side” are “not being obeyed”.

The road safety officer added that the school warden “manages the crossing efficiently and effectively”.

The officer observed cars that were parked on the public road, alongside kerbs on the opposite side of the road from houses on either side of the school gates, and on the road leading into cul-de-sacs in the estate.

A local resident approached the road safety officer and said he has to leave his house at 7.30am as otherwise “he will be blocked in by parents”, but overall the officer found that “no major issues were observed on the day of the visit, and no major obstruction or hold-ups were observed”.

The council informed councillors recently that the area had been re-inspected, and that the original traffic report still applies.

Action is required

Cllr O’Connor told The Echo: “This is something that a number of councillors have been working on, and there is no doubt in my mind that some action is required on behalf of residents.

“People in the area are concerned about the impact of the traffic, and we’ve all had a number of complaints about it.

“There are incidents where people feel they can’t get in and out of their houses.

“We’ll have to discuss the findings of the report with the road safety officer.”

The report will be discussed at next month’s Tallaght Traffic Management Meeting, on September 24.
