Adamus gets his reward with National U22 title
PATRYK Adamus of Drimnagh Boxing Club clinched the National Under 22 60kg Championship title after emerging on the right side of a split decision against Francis Cleary of Ballina in the Final on Saturday.
The victory was just rewards for the hard-working Inchicore man who has improved phenomenally since joining Drimnagh close to two years ago.
Indeed since coming under the wing of coaches Michael Carruth, Jimmy Kelly and Karl McLoughlin, he has won College’s Finals and the Leinster Seniors while making the finals of two Dungarvan Cups as well as the National Senior Championships.
Last weekend’s title win represented his biggest achievement so far and one that he hopes will lead to national squad selection for the European Under 22 Championships in Romania in May.
Adamus kicked off his National Under 22 Championship campaign with convincing third-round stoppage of Daryl O’Brien of St Catherine’s.
This was followed up with another split-decision win in the last four against Paulstown’s Shane Flavin who had previously beaten him in a Dungarvan Cup decider.
And he was made work for the prize by Cleary in what was a tough final, taking the win and completing a double for the club in this competition with Kellie McLoughlin having scooped the Women’s Under 22 54kg prize.
Meanwhile there was disappointment for both Jake Patterson and Nicola Moorehouse of the neighbouring Crumlin Boxing Club after they came up short in their respective National Under 22 title fights.
The former, competing at Super Heavyweight was beaten 4-1 by Martin J Mongans of Ennis while Moorehouse lost out to Amy Broadhurst in the Women’s 60kg decider.
Kilnamanagh’s James Clarke also slipped at the final hurdle after he shipped a loss to Kevin Sheehy of St Francis in the Heavyweight decider.
