Adeleke stars in a fine weekend for Tallaght AC

RHASIDAT Adeleke was in superb form at the National Senior Athletics Championships in Morton Stadium, winning her first National Senior title in the 100m on Saturday before scooping silver in the 200m the following day.

In what was a fine weekend for Tallaght Athletic Club in Santry, Adeleke secured top spot on the podium for the 100m after crossing the line in 11.29.

On Sunday afternoon she lined up in the 200m decider alongside Phil Healy (Bandon AC) with whom she shared the National record of 22.96.

And in what was undoubtedly the race of the Championships, Adeleke was pipped for a second gold when Healy caught her in the final few strides to clinch the narrowest of victories in 11.83 with her Tallaght rival clocking 11.84.

The race would have gone down as a new National record and the fastest 200m women’s race in the history of Irish athletics, but unfortunately the wind gauge read 2.1 – just over the permissible limit of 2.0.

Meanwhile, Adeleke’s clubmates Joseph Ojewumi and Simon Essuman both qualified for the final of the Men’s 100m after finishing first and third respectively in their heat’s while Eoin Doherty bowed out after taking third in his heat.

In the final Ojewumi finished fifth with a faster time of 10.71 ahead of Essuman in 10th in 11.04.

The National Junior 100m and long jump title holder Jennifer Hanrahan was another who contested the 100m, but her time of 11.97 was not enough to see her through to the final although she finished an impressive fifth in the Long Jump with a leap of 5.97.

Brishan Le Goff O’ Brien recorded a new personal best time of 9:24.12 in the Men’s 3000m Steeplechase, beating his previous best time by 12 seconds.

It was enough to see him finish up seventh while Sean McCabe clocked 2:18.79 in the heats of the 800m and Sarah Doyle recorded 29.02 in her 200m heat.

Elsewhere, at the Dublin Juvenile Championships in Tallaght, Jack Kelly won the Under 17 1500m title with Shasta O’ Brien, Moss Grace and Conor Murphy in pursuit.

Callan Brennan, Abbie Brennan and Cadan Clifford all ran well in their Under 18 and 19 1500m contests.

The club also hosted the second Dublin Graded Meet with Eoghan Keaney recording a new 800m PB of 1:58.204 on his way to second place in the Grade AB1 contest while Sean McCabe clocked 2:08.67 in winning the Grade C 800m event.

John Lyons finished up in 2.13.72 in his first graded outing while Joshua O’ Brien, in his first ever track contest, came home fourth in the 3000m before Sarah Doyle was timed at 29.022 in her 200m race.

Tallaght will again be hosting Dublin Juvenile T&F Championship events this Friday and Sunday as well as the third Dublin Graded meet the following Wednesday.
