Adeleke stars in Leinster Schools Championships
RHASIDAT Adeleke set a new Irish record on her way to a double at the Irish Life Health Leinster Schools Track and Field Championships in Morton Stadium last weekend.
Representing Presentation Terenure, the hugely-rated Tallaght sprinter fended off the challenge of her friend Patience Jumbo Gula of St Vincent’s Dundalk to take the Intermediate Girls 100m in a time of 11.60 with Yemi Talabi of King’s Hospital in third.
And she followed that up by breaking Michelle Walsh’s 200m record that had stood for no less that 40 years when she crossed the line in 24.11, Gula again proving her closest rival in this race.
Talabi was back on the podium again to collect silver in the Long Jump behind winner Jennifer Hanrahan of OLS Terenure
A number of other Tallaght athletes also produced some fine performances for their schools including Jennifer McAdams who battled strongly throughout her 1500m contest at Intermediate level, but had to settle for silver.
In the 800m, Amy Kenna of St MacDara’s CC finished runner-up in a time of 2.21:88 with Holy Family Rathcoole’s Jennifer McAdams following suit in the 1500m before Eadaoin Stafford of Coláiste Bride threw a distance of 10.55m to bag silver in the Shot Putt.
In the Minor Girls 75m Hurdles Sophia Hyland of Loreto Beaufort took gold in a time of 11.97 and third place in the Long Jump with a best effort measuring 4.88m.
Her schoolmate Ellie Dunphy also picked up bronze in the Minor High Jump after clearing 1.45m while Kings Hospital’s Hannah Moriarty scooped gold in the Minor Long Jump with an effort measuring 5.05m.
The Junior Girls 100m saw Nadislane Habongo of St Colmcille’s CS and Sancta Maria’s Fortune Chukwu emerge second and third respectively with the former also finishing third over 200m.
There was a third place finish for King’s Hospital in the Relay while Amy Callaghan of Greenhills finished fourth in the High Jump as did HFCS Rathcoole’s Even Moonan in the Triple Jump.
Callaghan topped the podium in the Shot Putt with a throw of 10.76m before OLS Terenure’s Lida Bradshaw finished fourth in the Javelin as did Greenhill’s Áine O’Sullivan in the Under 16 Girls Shot Putt.
St Joseph’s in Lucan
Lara O’Byrne of St Joseph’s in Lucan and Coláiste Bride’s Lystus Ebosele enjoyed a good return from Senior level competition.
The former chalked up two bronze medals in the 100m Hurdles and High Jump while Ebosele stormed to victory in the Shot Putt with a superb effort clearing 11.67m before finishing second in the Discus (37.14m).
In the Boys section of the Leinster Schools Championships, Kings Hospital made it’s presence felt with Rex Dunlop second in the Minor 75m Hurdles before accounting for the first and fourth place finishers in the Discus in Cian Smith and Manie Akapan respectively.
A clearance of 5.63 m saw Bobby Amadi of Templeogue College secure gold in the Minor Long Jump while another of the Kings Hospital contingent Christian Fasole finished runner-up in the Junior Boys 200m.
Rayhan Issah of Terenure College made his presence felt in Under 16 Boys competition with second place in the 200m and first in the Long Jump while schoolmate Cian Sullivan threw 11.27m to take third in the Shot Putt.
In the Intermediate Boys division there were bronze medal wins for Cian Dunne (St Colmcille’s CS) in the 100m Hurdles and Darragh McAuley (Drimnagh Castle) in the 400m Hurdles in which Terenure College’s Cormac Gaffney took fourth position.
Templeogue College’s Liam Clancy clocked 2.03:58 on his way to fourth place in the 800m while in the Boys Senior competition, Terenure’s Eoin Keaney was runner-up in the 200m Steeplechase and Conor Hanrahan was third for Templeogue College in the 400m Hurdles.
Christopher Duffy of St MacDara’s came home third in the 400m before Gide Aoigan of Holy Family Rathcoole threw a fine distance of 41.75m on his way to silver in the Javelin.
