Advice and local emergency numbers issued as preparations for Storm Callum put in place

SOUTH Dublin County Council’s Severe Weather Assessment Team met earlier today to ensure all preparations for Storm Callum and its aftermath are in place.
The meeting followed Met Éireann’s status orange warning for most coastal counties, including Dublin – with the warning remaining in place throughout tonight and into tomorrow morning.
According to the council, strong gales and heavy rain are expected to hit the South of Ireland by 10pm this tonight – reaching the greater Dublin area by midnight.
In a statement this afternoon, the council said that its crews will be on call overnight.
However, risk assessments will be carried out to ensure that it is safe for staff to go out during periods of strong winds and heavy rainfall.
The council added: “All crews are currently expected to be available from 7am [Friday morning] to begin the clean-up operation as winds are expected to begin to ease.
“This will be monitored throughout the night by council staff and updates will be available through Met Éireann.”
Advice
The council and Dublin Fire Brigade have reminded people to store or dissemble garden/patio/balcony furniture and trampolines before going to bed tonight – as they can be turned into dangerous objects in strong winds.
Check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours.
Dublin Fire Brigade has advised against using real candles tonight and reminded people to charge devices such as mobile phones or laptops in preparation of any power outages.
ESB Network’s has advised to never approach or touch fallen electricity wires in the event of a fault. Call its emergency service immediately on 1850 372 999.

Road Safety
Road users urged to exercise extreme caution.
Drivers advised to never attempt to drive through flooded roads and to heed any warnings of detours.
Beware of objects being blown onto the road; watch out for fallen debris and vehicles veering across the road and allow extra space between vehicles and vulnerable road users such as cyclists and motorcyclist.
Drive with dipped headlights at all times.
Pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclist are advised to wear bright clothing with reflective armbands or belt.
