Alleged assault on teen was ‘out of the blue’

AN ASSAULT on a teenager at Rathfarnham Shopping Centre over the weekend has been described as an “out of the blue” occurrence in an otherwise quiet area, according to a local councillor.

GardaI confirmed to The Echo that at approximately 10pm on Saturday night, a 16-year-old boy was allegedly assaulted at the shopping centre by two males who were armed with a hammer and a metal bar.

The garda spokesperson added: “The youth received head injuries and was taken to Tallaght Hospital. Investigations are continuing.”

William Priestley, a Green Party councillor who lives in Rathfarnham, told The Echo: “I’m shocked to hear that something like that has happened – it’s really out of the blue with the routine of the community here.

“I’m astounded that something like this has happened.

“I’ll be bringing this issue up with the meeting of the Joint Policing Committee on Friday, to ensure that this incident is investigated and that it doesn’t fall off the radar.”

According to a post on a local Facebook group for nearby residents – where the anonymous poster wanted to make others in the locality aware of the incident – the victim of the alleged assault was “very thankful for the shoppers who rushed to their aid and looked after them” after the assault.
