Anne’s and Towers share the spoils

A SHARE of the spoils was a fair outcome as St Anne’s and Round Tower (Clondalkin) played out a 2-10 to 2-10 draw in the opening round of the Senior Two Championship in Bohernabreena on Saturday evening.

The windy conditions played a major part in this contest with Anne’s coming from 2-7 to 0-2 down just before the interval.

Towers had the advantage of the elements in the opening period and after 20 minutes of play were 0-5 to 0-1 to the good.

Stalwart Ian Ward was a key player for Tower’s at corner forward with a couple of points while Joey Leech and keeper Gary Cleary also found the range.

The Towers goal arrived on 25 minutes when full forward James Kelly cleverly chipped the Anne’s netminder.

This gave the visitors a big lift and a second goal came five minutes later when Ward fisted the ball to the back of the net to leave it 2-7 to 0- 2.

Anne’s however received a big boost with the last play of the half when full forward Jamie O’Neill fired to the back of Cleary’s net to score at a crucial time in the game.

On the changeover, Anne’s used the elements to their advantage with O’Neill leading the charge along with Sean Stewart upfront.

Stewart scored four points in total for the home side while Eoin Kennedy, Ben Jones and Scott Fulham split the posts to reduce the deficit.

Then the game took a twist when Scott Fulham saw Cleary out of his box and he scored from 40 yards out to leave the match in the melting pot.

Conor Flannery and Eric Finn were on target for Tower’s but O’Neill struck the equaliser as both teams went chasing the win.

Anne’s did have a late opportunity to score the winner, but Tower’s held out to secure a share in the group stages.
