Avonbeg Road Cycle Scheme will aim to provide active travel benefits

PLANS for the new Avonbeg Road Cycle Scheme have gone to public consultation which will run for the next month.

The new cycle scheme, which is being developed by South Dublin County Council in conjunction with the National Transport Authority went to public consultation on Tuesday, October 5 and will run until November 2.

The proposed 1.3km network is intended to provide more sustainable transport options for commuters as well as active travel benefits for local communities and will provide cycle connectivity from the Old Bawn Road to the Dodder Greenway via Avonbeg Road on route 7 on the Cycle South Dublin Plan.

Some of the main characteristics of the proposed design will be to upgrade the existing 2m wide footpath on the north side of the road to a 4m shared pedestrian and cycle space, which will link up with the N81 crossing at Glenview, the Dodder Greenway and the retail units at St. Dominic’s Shopping Centre.

A new wide grass verge on the northern verge will be created which will include a large number of new trees that will create a tree lined avenue and new public lighting will be installed. The road in the vicinity of the bridge will also be slightly re-aligned to provide a larger, improved public realm area that will incorporate planting.

The design incorporates a proposal to narrow the existing carriageway width of Avonbeg Road from 9m to 6m to tackle excessive speeding as well as reducing the radii at each junction to reduce car turning speeds and shorten the pedestrian crossing distance.

The proposed plans for the cycle scheme can be viewed on South Dublin County Council’s website until November 2, 2021 at 10.00am.
