Bosco clinch Conway Cup after late Clarke winner against Lucan
BEN CLARKE headed home an extra time winner to see St John Bosco clinch the Under 15 Conway Cup at the expense of a relentless Lucan United outfit in Greenogue on Saturday.
Finishing 2-1, the match saw Lucan enjoy the better opening half hour and take the lead through Eoin Hanley, before they found themselves level with their Drimnagh rivals at the halftime break after Josh Quigley served up an equaliser.
St John Bosco edged out Lucan United in extra time on Saturday.
It was Daniel Dagg who orchestrated the match opener, slipping a couple of challenges as he broke up the left wing before whipping in the ball to Hanley who vollied it home.
The Lucan goal scorer was unlucky not to have added to his tally, hitting the bar soon after before seeing another effort fly over.
Yet it was Fade Adeniran who went closest to a second for the team when he turned the ball just wide after Conor Dobbs had broke from midfield and set him up.
Instead Bosco restored parity when Michael McCarthy’s delivery from the left wing was met by the head of Quigley just six minutes before the halftime recess.
The match was shaping up to be a closely fought one as many would have predicted given their previous battles on the divisional front.
Indeed Bosco and Lucan had proven the top sides in the DDSL’s truncated Premier Two this year and there was little to separate them here as they both carved out further chances.
Bosco’s Craig Donnelly who had seen his first half effort from just outside the box saved, saw another one in the second half cannon back off the framework.
Brad Dijon saw his attempt from inside the box travel wide after Quigley had put too much air under his and consequently sent it the wrong side to the crossbar.
At the other end Eoin Hanley almost nudged Lucan back in front with a delicate chip that that rolled just wide of the mark and he was involved in another promising move soon after when he latched on to Brian Ikihne’s pass before feeding it into Adeniran, who turned it just wide.
In the end it was Lucan who would be punished for their squandered openings after another telling delivery from McCarthy, this time from a corner, found Clarke at the back post and he headed home with just four minutes remaining.
