Boys keep the ’Coole in Fenlon Cup thriller
A SECOND-HALF strike by Jacob Clarke accounted for the only goal in this season’s Under 15 Fenlon Cup Final as Rathcoole Boys edged out Kilnamanagh 1-0 in Greenogue on Saturday.
Having lost out to Rathcoole by three goals in DDSL Major One action earlier in the season, Kilnamanagh always knew they would have to turn in a big performance to get their hands on last weekend’s prize.
Kilnamanagh were pipped for the prize in Greenogue
And they certainly made a real go of it, carving out several good opportunities through Jason Golding and Karim Ndongosi who twice went close with headers, his first bouncing down and then over the bar with his second, a similar effort that found only the arms of Rathcoole goalkeeper Cullen Lambert.
Golding almost found the target from a 20-yard free kick that dipped just over the crossbar after which another long-range attempt from play few narrowly wide.
Working their way into the match after a somewhat slower start that their opponents, Rathcoole almost opened their account through Harry Farrell who struck just wide and saw a header stopped by Kilnamanagh netminder Evan Mackin.
Yet they finally broke the deadlock some ten minutes into the second half when Callum Forte produced a sublime through ball to Clarke on the left side of the box and he maintained his composure to shoot home.
Adam Bolster at centre half and right midfielder Matteo Carron helped Rathcoole control the tempo of the game although their Tallaght rivals did almost serve up a late leveller when Cian Dowl-ing struck from the edge of the box only to see his effort parried and then pounced on by the Rathcoole Number One.
