Brave Glenanne crash out of Jacqui Porter Cup

GLENANNE Women’s 1s were knocked out of the Jacqui Porter Cup after a narrow 3-2 defeat to Three Rock Rovers Women’s 1s in a fiercely contested second round encounter that was played at a high tempo throughout.

The match got off to a lively start with both sides showing attacking intent from the opening whistle.

Three Rock Rovers struck first in the opening quarter, capitalising on a swift counter attack that caught the Glenanne defence momentarily out of position.

The early goal set the tone for an energetic contest and Glenanne responded well, refusing to let the setback disrupt their rhythm.

Their positive play was soon rewarded when Roisin Doody converted from a well worked short corner routine to level the scores.

The equaliser gave Glenanne renewed confidence and they began to apply more pressure through midfield, moving the ball efficiently and competing strongly in possession.

That momentum carried into the second quarter, where Glenanne made the most of their chances in the attacking circle.

Despite limited entries into the position D, they were clinical when opportunities arose.

Clare Shillington finished calmly from open play to to give Glenanne a 2-1 lead, showcasing sharp movement and composure under pressure.

The goal was the result of sustained effort and discipline as Glenanne worked hard off the ball to limit Rovers’ attacking opportunities.

After the interval, Three Rock Rovers raised their intensity and began to assert greater control. Their increased pressure paid dividends when they found an equaliser with a powerful strike inside the D.

Sensing an opportunity, Rovers continued to push forward and soon regained the lead with a well constructed team goal that saw them break through the Glenanne defensive line.

Glenanne battled bravely in the closing stages but found it difficult to maintain prolonged possession in the Rovers’ circle.

At the other end goalkeeper Flourish Olufemi Ojo delivered an outstanding performance producing a series of excellent saves to keep the scoreline tight and give her side hope of a late comeback.

Despite their determination and resilience, Glenanne were unable to find a second equaliser, and the match concluded with Three Rock Rovers edging the contest 3-2 to progress in the Jacqui Porter Cup.
