Brave Niamh donates 20 inches of hair to Rapunzel
By Mary Dennehy
A TEN-YEAR-OLD girl went that extra length to support children who have lost their hair through an illness, by donating 20-inches of her locks to the Rapunzel Foundation.
A charitable organisation that makes wigs for children with hair loss, the Rapunzel Foundation not only received 20-inches of hair from local girl Niamh Kavanagh but also €240 in sponsorship from the St Mary’s national school pupil.

Speaking with The Echo, Niamh’s aunt and Godmother Karen Kavanagh said: “Niamh has been growing her hair for years, her hair was her crown and glory.
“However, she heard about the Rapunzel Foundation and decided that she wanted to donate some of her hair and raise some sponsorship money, which is amazing for a 10-year-old.
“Niamh is a great kid and has a lot of empathy and her parents are very proud of her.”
When asked how Niamh felt minus 20-inches of her locks, Karen said: “Initially she was a little worried but after she got her hair cut she felt amazing and felt so much lighter.
“She was also very happy that she was able to make a difference to children using the Rapunzel Foundation.
“Kids really are brilliant and, despite what some say, they do get involved and can make a difference.”
