FOLLOWING being awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from St Vincent de Paul, Bridie Sweeney hung up her blue jumper and badge last Friday after working her final shift volunteering at the St Vincent de Paul shop on Main Street in Tallaght.

Bridie retired from her role after many happy years helping people in the local community.

Bridie told The Echo: “I’ve made many, many friends in the shop.

“I suppose it’s sad to leave after a lifetime, but I just want to take a rest now!”

Bridie added that she has gotten great satisfaction out of helping people over the years, and that she has always felt a responsibility to “do the right thing”.

“People will come into the shop, but I’ve always said that the really needy people will not ask [for help].

“You have to keep their dignity, it’s so important.

“You cannot tell people other people’s problems.”

Bridie’s unwavering commitment to helping people in the community has made her an important part of the social fabric in Tallaght, with all of Bridie’s friends, and people that she has met through the years, celebrating her retirement last Friday.
