Bulbs not bonfires

FAMILIES came out over the October Bank Holiday weekend to take part in planting spring bulbs for Tallaght Community Council’s annual ‘Bulbs not Bonfires’ pollinator planting in Tallaght Village.

Several families took part in the planting with Spring bulbs which were donated by South Dublin County Council, along with some volunteers from Tallaght Community Council (TCC) over the weekend.

“We are delighted to take part in the campaign for the second year in Tallaght village. It was a nice occasion for us to roll up our sleeves and have some fun while helping increase the number of pollinator plants that will feed the bees next Spring,” said Tara De Buitlear, Volunteer PRO, TCC.

“It was lovely to catch up with everyone safely outdoors after a long period of not being able to meet up with neighbours and friends.”

The volunteer planting crew planted a mixed variety of Spring pollinator bulbs around the oak trees on Main Street in the village, as well as the large pollinator flowerbed. The village planting was followed by an al fresco street coffee break.

Speaking about the importance of the planting, Liz Kennedy, Volunteer Chair of TCC said: “It is important to TCC that we invest in our historic village and ensure we keep it in scope for as many environmental, sustainability and heritage projects as possible.”

TCC hope to hold more community events again safely as soon as Covid-19 restrictions continue to ease.

“We are looking forward to seeing a splash of Spring colour on Main St in a few weeks,” added Tara.
